Time Pressure

Time Pressure is a series exploring the nature of time and its perception in the modern world and through history.

The work begins with a simple physical act: pressing the word Time created in calligraphy first, through a cutout into paper by hand. The title refers both to this literal pressure involved in making the work and to the pressure of time as it is experienced in contemporary life.

The process itself requires effort, concentration and slowness. Repeatedly pressing Time into the surface of the paper becomes almost meditative, a way of slowing time down through the act of making. In this sense, the works are also a contemplation of how we might create spaces within the folds of time: moments in daily life where we can step outside its constant acceleration and enter a different depth of attention.

Across cultures and throughout history, people have developed practices that create such spaces, through contemplation, ritual, repetition, silence and making. Time Pressure reflects on this tension between being subject to time and consciously shaping our experience of it.

A series of limited edition handmade embossed/debossed prints on paper, based on calligraphy drawing.

These works play with light. The embossed artwork has a slight elevation. The work can be installed with or without a dedicated light source.

Each artwork is hand embossed on white or black archival cotton paper, 76 × 56 cm, each edition 5 + 1 AP, 2018.
